FINECO DEFENDING THE SEA

The sea is a precious resource that must be defended and safeguarded.

For this reason, Fineco has decided to join the Water Defenders Alliance, a project promoted by LifeGate to respond to the problems of our waters by proposing concrete, measurable and science-based solutions.

The objective is to defend and save Italian waters from the three most serious threats, namely plastic pollution, hydrocarbon pollution and the fragility of the habitats.

As Water Defender, Fineco supports LifeGate's initiatives to defend the sea by adopting solutions that contribute to reducing the waste present in our waters.

Collecting plastics

Seabin devices, plastic collection bins

The Seabin is a bin capable of collecting approximately 500 kg of floating waste from the water per year, including plastics, microplastics and fibre fragments. It is placed in the water of marinas, docks, yacht clubs and commercial ports in a “accumulation point”, i.e. where the winds and currents tend to cause waste to deposit.

Fineco supports the project through the installation of 2 Seabin devices in the ports of Rome Fiumicino and Venezia Marina Sant’Elena with the aim of contributing to the collection of floating waste.

Since the beginning of the collaboration with LifeGate, the Seabins sponsored by Fineco have collected approximately 9.500 Kg of waste, , including plastics and microplastics, equal to the weight of over 630.000 0.5 litre bottles.

The travelling drone that intercepts waste

The Pixie Drone is a drone remote-controlled at a distance of 500 m which, while flying, can intercept up to 60 kg of macro waste found in the sea per mission.

Fineco adopted this technology with travelling drone for 18 months in the locations of Venice, Rome and Palermo.

Collecting hydrocarbons

The sponges that combat chemical pollution

Reusable and water-repellent, the sponges positioned in the bilge of the boat are able to prevent accidental spills of hydrocarbons, allowing up to 100% of the oils to be absorbed before they end up in the sea.

Fineco contributes to the prevention, collection and storage of hydrocarbons with the provision of 1 Hydrocarbon kit in the port of Palermo and in Venice in the Marina of Sant'Elena.

Marine habitat restoration

Underwater cleaning to protect the seabed

70% of marine waste settles on the seabed and over 77% of this waste is made up of plastic. Underwater cleanup missions help protect the health of the marine ecosystem by removing waste deposits.

Fineco participates in the mission to collect waste from the seabed to clean it from pollution at the Santa Teresa Smart Bay in the Gulf of La Spezia.
